Pick a fabric you love and you have made about a third of the decision. The rest is how the curtain is measured, what the track is fixed into, and where the hem stops — and none of that is visible in a showroom. It is also the part that decides whether you still like the curtain in ten years.

It is the first question, before anyone opens a fabric book. A west-facing living room here takes the full afternoon sun from about two o'clock, and in January that sun is still on the glass at six. The fabric that looks perfect in a south-facing bedroom will fade in that room, and the room itself will hold the heat until well after dark. Same house, same fabric, completely different outcome — which is why we will not quote off a phone call.
The second thing people forget is the ceiling. A Queenslander with three-metre ceilings and a curtain made to match is carrying real weight, and weight is what finds out a lazy fixing. Add coastal air working on the componentry and a track screwed into plasterboard alone will eventually let go. It is not a question of whether, only of which summer.

The detail that matters
Three Things That Decide How It Hangs
Every curtain company will show you fabric. These are the three decisions that actually determine what the finished curtain looks like on your wall — and the three that get skipped most often.
A curtain measured to the window is measured wrong. The track has to run well past the reveal on both sides so the curtain can stack clear of the glass — that is what gives you the whole window in daylight and a proper seal at night. Get it wrong and you have paid for a curtain that permanently covers part of its own window. How far past depends on the heading you choose; the heading styles each stack back differently.
Plasterboard on its own will not hold a curtain track for the life of the curtain, and a three-metre drop weighs more than it looks. The fix is timber, or noggings put in before the track goes up. It adds an hour to the install and it is the whole difference between a curtain that hangs straight for twenty years and one that quietly pulls away from the wall in five.
Floating just clear of the floor, breaking on it, or puddling are three different rooms, not three finishes. A float reads crisp and takes a vacuum underneath. A break softens a formal space. A puddle wants a fabric with the weight to fall properly and a household without a large dog. Decide at the measure, because the drop is set in the make and it is not adjustable afterwards.

A sheer on the outer track for the day, something heavier behind it for the evening. A double track costs more up front and it is the single upgrade nobody has ever told us they regret. Sheers do the daylight half.

There is no honest number before a measure, and anyone who gives you one over the phone is guessing at your window. What we can tell you is the shape of it: the quote comes back itemised component by component — fabric, lining, heading, track, install — so you can see where the money actually goes and take a line out if you want to. It is valid for 30 days.
The quote lands within 24 to 48 hours of the measure. From there, curtains are typically 3 to 4 weeks to make and fit, though a specialty fabric or an unusual heading can push that out — whatever it is for your job, it is on the quote in writing before you commit.

For most rooms the real answer is both, on a double track: sheers for daytime privacy and light, blockout behind for the evening. If you genuinely have to pick one, it comes down to what the room is for. We wrote a full comparison in sheer vs blockout curtains.
A track is functional and hides itself, usually behind a pelmet or recessed into the ceiling line, and it carries weight better over a long span. A rod is decorative and meant to be seen. Long drops and wide windows lean towards track; a feature window in a period room can carry a rod.
We measure and we install. That is deliberate — most of the problems people bring us on other companies' curtains are installation problems, not fabric ones, and we would rather not hand that risk to someone else halfway through the job.
