Blinds Gold Coast

Why Lusso, Gold Coast

What most people get wrong here

Two Blinds, One Bracket

Almost every enquiry that starts with “we need blockout” turns out to be about glare. Blockout is exactly the right answer at night and in a bedroom, and I will happily sell it to you for both. It fights daytime glare only by making the room dark, though, which is why on a living room facing water the answer is usually two fabrics on one bracket — a sunscreen for the day, a blockout behind it for the evening.

  • 01Forty-eight years on this coast, three generations of the same family, and the same phone number. Long enough that we have been back to adjust blinds we made before the client’s children were born.
  • 02Over 10,000 completed blinds projects across the Gold Coast and Brisbane — canal-front houses, beachside units, hinterland builds. The awkward window is not a surprise here.
  • 03Member of the Window Shading Association of Australia, with a published Code of Ethics behind it rather than a badge on a website.
  • 04Premium Australian-made product, which is the boring reason a repair is a phone call and a fortnight rather than an email and a shipping container.

Light off the water behaves differently

It Comes In Under The Blind

The City of Gold Coast puts it plainly in its own records: the city has 135 constructed lakes and more than 400 kilometres of canals, the largest constructed canal network in the southern hemisphere. Add the Broadwater and forty-odd kilometres of open beach to that and you get a city where an unusual share of homes have their main glass pointed at water.

Which matters, because reflected light does not arrive the way direct sun does. It comes off the surface from below the horizon and travels up into the room. A blind lowered from the head rail covers the top of the opening first — the part the sun uses — and leaves the bottom, which is the part the water uses. That is the whole explanation for a complaint I hear constantly: the blind is down and the room is still unusable at four in the afternoon.

The fix is a fabric that cuts glare across the full height of the opening rather than a blind that blocks the top of it, and sometimes a blind that runs bottom-up instead. The Australian Government’s glazing guidance makes the same point from the other direction: what reaches the glass is the problem, and how you treat the opening decides what you can do about it.

Then there is the vertical city. Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Main Beach are stacked with apartments whose window reveals are barely deep enough to take a stack, and whose by-laws often have something to say about what your windows look like from the street. In a holiday let, add a blind that gets pulled by strangers more times in a year than a family home’s does in five. That is a decision about the mechanism, not the fabric, and it is the one nobody asks about until the second season.

The detail that matters

Three Questions Worth Asking Before You Order

Everyone on this coast will show you a fabric book and a price. Far fewer will ask what the window looks at, what the blind is being screwed into, or how long you will actually be waiting. Those are the three that decide whether you are still pleased in five years.

01 — The glare

Ask what the fabric’s openness is

A sunscreen fabric is rated by how open its weave is: a tighter weave cuts more glare and gives you more daytime privacy, a more open one keeps more of the view. It is a genuine trade-off and there is no setting that wins both. On a canal or ocean outlook I would rather show you two or three options against your actual window at the time of day that bothers you than pick one from a sample book on a table. That is a large part of what the measure appointment is for.

02 — The fix

Find out what is behind the plasterboard

In a house, a bracket has to reach timber or a batten — plasterboard alone will let go, and it is a question of when rather than whether. In an apartment it is the opposite problem: there is usually plenty of concrete and a strict view about drilling into it, so the check is the by-laws rather than the structure. Either way it is settled at the measure, not on installation day with the blind already made.

03 — The wait

Weeks, not months, and it goes on the quote

Roller and honeycomb blinds run two to three weeks from check-measure to installation. Roman blinds, panel glides and blockouts generally run three to four. Outdoor blinds are four to six. Motorisation adds about a week, more if power has to be run to the opening. Venetians, verticals and shutters we quote job by job rather than publish a range that flatters us. All of it is a good-faith estimate rather than a guarantee, and all of it goes on your quote before you pay anything.

Gold Coast clients

Eighty-five five-star reviews, most of them from this coast

The ones worth reading are not about the day it was installed. They are about what the blind was like four years and one salt-air summer later.

We have been very happy that we chose Lusso blinds right through our beachside unit. The quality is excellent and perfect for the climate and the salt air. On the rare occasion that we have needed a repair it has been done…

Anne-Marie Malouf

Have used Lusso on numerous occasions since we moved to the Gold Coast 5 years ago and cannot speak highly enough about the quality of both the products and service. Would not hesitate in recommending them.

Chris & Julie Allen

I am a designer on the Gold Coast and love working with Lusso! They are efficient, thorough and always on time with appointments and delivery of curtains and blinds. I would highly recommend this company

Where they go

Room by room, what I would actually specify

The Water-Facing Rooms Are The Hard Ones

01 Water-facing living

A sunscreen and a blockout on one double bracket. The sunscreen carries the day and keeps the outlook you paid for; the blockout takes the evening. One blind here is a compromise you notice every afternoon.

Quote
02 Bedrooms

Blockout, properly — and cordless where a child sleeps. This is the one room where the fabric really does have to do the work, and the one room where people under-spend.

Quote
03 Apartments & holiday lets

Honeycomb for a shallow reveal and glass you are not permitted to alter. In a short-let, spend the money on the mechanism rather than the fabric — it is going to be operated by people who have no reason to be gentle with it.

Quote
04 Kitchens & bathrooms

An aluminium venetian wipes down and does not hold a smell. Over a bath or a sink I would rather sell you a shutter than a fabric blind I already know will not enjoy the humidity.

Quote
05 Sliding doors to the deck

Panel glides or verticals, because both stack clear of the opening. If the sun is the real complaint, stopping it outside the glass beats anything hung on the inside of it.

Before you ask

Blinds on the Gold Coast, answered honestly

How much do blinds cost on the Gold Coast?

Not a figure anyone can honestly give you before measuring — but here is the shape of it. Cost is driven by the size of the opening, the fabric, whether the blind is corded, cordless or motorised, and how many windows are on one order. A whole-house order is meaningfully cheaper per window than the same blinds bought a few at a time, because the measure, the delivery and the installation visit cost the same either way. Motorisation is chosen at specification time and adds to both the price and the lead time. You get an itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days, with no deposit required to see it.

How long do custom blinds take?

Roller and honeycomb blinds run two to three weeks from check-measure to installation. Roman blinds, panel glides and blockouts generally run three to four. Outdoor blinds are four to six. Motorisation adds about a week, more if power has to be run to the opening. Venetians, verticals and shutters we quote job by job. These are good-faith estimates rather than guarantees, and the number for your job goes on your quote.

Which blinds actually work against glare off the water?

A sunscreen fabric, not a blockout. Glare off a canal or the ocean arrives from below the horizon and comes in under a blind that has been lowered from the top, which is why a blockout can be fully down and the room still unusable in the afternoon. A sunscreen cuts the glare across the whole opening while keeping the outlook; pair it with a blockout on a double bracket if the room also needs to go dark at night.

Do you cover the whole Gold Coast?

Yes — Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Robina, Coolangatta, Southport, Main Beach, Mermaid Beach, Hope Island, Currumbin and Arundel, and everywhere between them. The Gold Coast sits in the middle of a Byron Bay to Brisbane service corridor, so the drive is part of the job rather than a favour.

Are your blinds child-safe?

Corded internal window coverings installed in Australia must meet a mandatory safety standard: no loose cord may form a loop of 220mm or longer below 1,600mm from the floor, and cord guides and cleats have to sit above that height. We install to it every time. In a child’s room I will recommend cordless or motorised operation regardless, because a rule you never have to depend on is better than one you do.

Can you fit blinds in an apartment?

Regularly — a good share of what we do on this coast is high-rise. Two things are worth checking before you choose anything: what your by-laws say about the colour and appearance of window coverings seen from outside, which is often prescribed, and how deep the reveal is, which decides whether a blind can sit inside it or has to be face-fixed. Both get settled at the measure.

Do you do shutters as well as blinds?

Yes. Ours are Thermalite polymer shutters — hinged, sliding or fixed. They suit bathrooms, laundries and anywhere humidity would be unkind to a fabric. We do not sell timber or plantation shutters, so if that is specifically what you are after, we are not the right people and I would rather say so now.

What warranty do you offer?

We warrant our own installation for 12 months from the invoice date. The products themselves carry their manufacturer’s warranty, which runs from 12 months to 7 years depending on the system, componentry and fabric — the term that applies to your job is on the quote. Both take effect once the account is paid in full. All of that sits on top of your rights under the Australian Consumer Law, which nothing in our terms takes away.
