Why Lusso, Brisbane & Gold Coast

The softest thing that is still a blind

Buy Them For The Fabric, Not The Mechanism

If what you want is the warmth of a curtain on a window that has no room for one, a Roman is the answer. If what you want is to cover a large span cheaply, it is not — a Roman is a made piece of soft furnishing and it is priced like one. We will tell you which of those you are actually asking for.

  • 01Made to measure in your choice of fabric, so the blind can pick up a cushion, a bedhead or the curtains in the next room in a way no roller ever will.
  • 02One of the few blinds that suits a small window as well as a large one — which is why they turn up in bathrooms, studies and kitchen windows where a curtain would be impractical.
  • 03Forty-eight years and more than 10,000 completed projects across Brisbane and the Gold Coast, and Roman blinds have been in the range long enough to appear in our reviews.
  • 04An itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days. Nothing is ordered until you are completely comfortable with the selections.

Fabric wants a room that breathes

Put A Roman In The Rooms You Sit In

Where a Roman earns its place here is the room you actually live in — a living room, a bedroom, a study — where you want the softness of fabric on a window that is too small, too close to a wall, or too full of furniture to take a curtain. In a dry, conditioned room it will look exactly as good in ten years as it does on installation day.

The rooms worth a second thought are the wet ones. A Roman is a panel of fabric that sits still for months at a time, so a bathroom with one small window and no extraction, or a coastal bedroom shut up while you are away, is where fabric eventually marks along the bottom fold.

So we ask about ventilation before we quote fabric, and in the rooms where the answer is poor we will point you at something wipeable instead. That costs us the sale of a more expensive blind and saves everyone the conversation two summers later.

The detail that matters

A Roman blind is a curtain that folds instead of gathering

Everything that makes a Roman blind look right or look wrong happens in the make: how the folds are set, how the blind is lined, and how much of the window the stack sits over when it is up.

01 — Lining

The lining decides what the blind does

The face fabric is what you see and the lining is what the blind actually does. An unlined Roman filters light and shows the fabric's texture; a blockout lining darkens the room and gives the blind more body. It is worth deciding what you want the blind to do before you choose what you want it to look like, because the lining is not easy to change later.

02 — Stack

Mount above the reveal and keep the glass

When it is up, the folds stack at the top of the opening and sit over the glass. On a tall window that is barely noticeable; on a short one it can be a real bite out of the view and the light. If keeping the whole opening clear matters, a roller blind rolls away to far less.

03 — Safety

Corded blinds are covered by a mandatory standard

Roman blinds are usually cord-operated, which puts them under the mandatory Australian standard for corded internal window coverings. It governs how the cord is secured and kept out of reach. In a child's room we would rather talk you into a cordless option or shutters than fit a cord you have to think about.

Brisbane & Gold Coast clients

Very Happy With Our Roman Blinds

Roman blinds are the one product in the range a client named unprompted in their review, which is a fair reflection of how people feel about them once they are up.

We had a great experience with lusso blinds. We are very happy with our Roman blinds. We highly recommend their service.

Sam & Morgan

I stumbled across Lusso by pure accident and was glad I did, I found Deb and the boys to be very prompt, professional and price competitive and was also glad of their experience when it came to choosing what curtains & blinds…

Marie

Thank you to Deb and the team for their guidance in selecting the perfect blinds and curtains for our home. Prompt service, great workmanship and professional to deal with.

What we'd actually specify

01 Living areas

Where a Roman does its best work — fabric and warmth on a window that has no room for a curtain. Mount above the reveal so the stack sits on the wall rather than over the glass.

Quote
02 Bedrooms

Blockout lining, and be realistic about the sides. A Roman is not a blackout blind; light comes down both edges unless you fit it wall-to-wall or add a blockout blind behind.

Quote
03 Kitchens

Fine over a sink or a bench that stays dry, and a bad idea directly above a cooktop. Fabric and cooking grease do not part company easily.

Quote
04 Bathrooms & ensuites

Only where there is genuine ventilation. If the window is small and the extraction is poor, we will steer you to shutters instead, and we would rather do that than replace a marked blind.

05 Studies & small windows

One of the few blinds that looks deliberate on a small window. A roller on a narrow opening can look like an afterthought; a Roman looks like it was chosen.

Before you ask

Roman blinds — FAQs

How much do Roman blinds cost in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast?

More than a roller of the same size, because a Roman is a made piece of soft furnishing rather than a fabric on a tube. Fabric choice and lining drive most of the difference. We will not put a figure on a window we have not measured; you get an itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days.

Do Roman blinds block out light?

With a blockout lining they stop light through the fabric, but the blind sits inside or over a reveal and leaves gaps at the sides. For a genuinely dark bedroom, fit the blind outside the reveal wall-to-wall, or pair it with a blockout blind behind it.

Are Roman blinds suitable for bathrooms?

Only in a bathroom with real ventilation. Fabric that stays damp will eventually mark along the bottom fold, and this climate is not forgiving about it. If the window is small and the extraction is poor, shutters are the better answer and we will say so.

How much of the window does a Roman blind cover when it is up?

The folds stack at the head of the blind, so a raised Roman always sits over part of the opening. Mounting the blind above the reveal rather than inside it puts that stack on the wall instead of the glass, and it is the single easiest way to keep the view.

Can Roman blinds be made in my own fabric?

Fabric choice is the main reason people choose a Roman, and it is worth bringing anything you are trying to match to the measure — a cushion, a swatch, a photo of the next room. We will talk through what works as a blind, because not every furnishing fabric folds well.

Do you make Roman blinds for my suburb?

We work from Byron Bay to Brisbane, covering the Gold Coast, the Tweed Coast and the Brisbane inner suburbs, and we travel nationwide for larger projects. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call us on (07) 5528 4006 and we will tell you straight away.
