Window shutters Brisbane & Gold Coast

Built For A Climate That Warps Timber

Thermalite window shutters — an advanced polymer, made to measure in hinged, sliding or fixed panels and fitted by the third generation of a family business trading since 1978. Through Brisbane, the Gold Coast and down to Byron Bay.

Why Lusso, Brisbane & Gold Coast

Polymer, because this climate is hard on timber

Built For Bathrooms, Ensuites And Salt Air

Thermalite is made for the rooms that finish timber off — bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, and anything within a few streets of the water. It is the answer to a humidity problem rather than a beauty contest, and it is very good at it. Painted timber does look better in a dry, air-conditioned formal room, and anybody who tells you otherwise is selling polymer; it simply will not survive a Gold Coast bathroom. So we ask which rooms you are shuttering before we recommend anything.

  • 01Thermalite is an advanced polymer, made in hinged, sliding and fixed panels. It does not swell, stick or split its finish when the air sits at eighty per cent for a fortnight.
  • 02Forty-eight years and more than 10,000 completed projects across Brisbane and the Gold Coast — which is long enough to have seen what fails within a few streets of the water, and why.
  • 03Premium Australian-made product, and a BMAA membership that comes with a Code of Ethics rather than a badge on a website.
  • 04An itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days. Nothing is ordered until you are completely comfortable with the selections.

Local conditions

Humidity moves timber. Salt finishes the hardware.

Two Streets From The Water Changes Everything

Brisbane and the Gold Coast run months of high humidity at a stretch, and timber responds to humidity by moving. In a formal lounge with the air conditioning on, that movement is small enough to ignore. In an ensuite, a laundry or a west-facing bedroom that gets shut up all week, it is the difference between a louvre that closes and one that has to be forced.

The second problem is the one that decides the lifespan, and it is never the panel. It is the hardware. Airborne salt reaches a good deal further inland than people expect, and it goes for hinges, magnets and screws long before it touches the shutter itself. If you are within a few streets of the water, ask what the hardware is made of — not what the blade is made of.

Shutters also do something no blind does: they are a physical layer of insulation over the glass, which matters more here than a brochure suggests. Pair them with the right glazing and a west-facing room stops being a room you avoid between three and five.

The detail that matters

The panel outlives the hardware, not the other way round

Shutter pages argue about louvre colour. Almost nothing that goes wrong with a shutter is the louvre — it is the material moving, the blade width being wrong for the room, or the hinges giving up two streets from the water.

01 — Material

Polymer does not move, and that is the whole argument

Thermalite is an advanced polymer rather than a painted timber. It will not swell in humidity, it will not lift its finish above a shower, and it can be cleaned with water rather than treated with care. What it will not do is give you the grain of cedar. That is a real trade-off and we would rather name it than pretend it does not exist.

02 — Blade width

Wider blades give the window back

The wider the louvre, the fewer of them across the opening, and the more of the view you get when they are open. Narrower blades read as more traditional and block more of the glass stacked up. This is the choice most people never get offered, and it changes the room far more than the colour does.

03 — Safety

No cords, no chains, nothing to reach

Corded internal window coverings are governed by a mandatory Australian safety standard because of the strangulation risk to small children. Shutters sidestep it completely — there is no cord and no chain. If you have a toddler and a window seat, that is worth more than any fabric. Where a blind is the better fit, ask us about roller blinds with a compliant chain instead.

Brisbane & Gold Coast clients

Shutters, Blinds And Curtains

Most of these clients did not buy shutters on their own — they did a whole unit or a whole house at once. That is usually the cheapest way to do it, and the least disruptive.

We had shutters, blinds and curtains made by Lusso Fashion for our unit. The service was prompt and professional and completed even earlier than expected. Deb has a knack of knowing exactly what will suit the client and is…

Lynne & Peter

We love our shutters and curtains that were installed by Lusso Fashion for Windows. Friendly, professional and efficient service. Highly recommended.

Where they go

Thermalite shutters, room by room

What we'd actually specify

01 Bathrooms & ensuites

The room polymer was invented for. Steam, no ventilation and a window you want covered permanently — timber lasts about three years in there, and we have replaced enough of it to be sure.

02 Bedrooms

Shutters close tighter than a venetian but they are not a blackout. If you sleep past sunrise, pair them with a blockout blind behind, or accept a soft grey room rather than a dark one.

03 Living & dining

Sliding panels on the wide spans, hinged on anything under about a metre and a half. Hinged panels need somewhere to swing to, and that is the constraint people forget until fit day.

04 Apartments & high-rise

Check the body corporate rules first. Most towers specify what the outside of the window may look like, and shutters are visible from the street in a way a blind is not.

05 Rentals & holiday lets

Nothing to replace between tenants and nothing a guest can break. It is the one category where we will argue shutters cost less over ten years than blinds do.

Before you ask

Window shutters — FAQs

How much do window shutters cost in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast?

We will not put a figure on a window we have not measured. What moves the price is the size of the opening, the number of panels and whether they hinge, slide or sit fixed — a wide sliding run costs meaningfully more than the same glass in hinged panels. You get an itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days.

Are Thermalite shutters the same as plantation shutters?

They are the same style of shutter in a different material. “Plantation” describes the wide louvre look, and it is made in timber, polymer or aluminium depending on the supplier. Lusso fits Thermalite, which is an advanced polymer. We do not sell timber or aluminium shutters, so if you have your heart set on painted cedar we will tell you that rather than talk you out of it.

Will polymer shutters yellow or warp in the Queensland sun?

Polymer is specified for exactly this climate, which is why it turns up in bathrooms and coastal apartments where timber does not last. What does age is the hardware, particularly near the water, so ask about hinges and magnets rather than about the blade.

Can shutters be fitted to an unusual window shape?

Usually, yes — that is the advantage of making them to measure rather than buying them off a shelf. Arches, angles and raked heads are all workable. We need the dimensions and the aspect of the room at the measure before we can quote any of them.

Are shutters child-safe?

They have no cord and no chain, which removes the hazard that the mandatory Australian standard for corded internal window coverings exists to manage. For a room where you would otherwise fit a corded blind and there are small children in the house, that is the strongest single argument for shutters.

Do you fit shutters in my suburb?

We work from Byron Bay to Brisbane, covering the Gold Coast, the Tweed Coast and the Brisbane inner suburbs, and we travel nationwide for larger projects. If you are not sure whether you are in range, call us on (07) 5528 4006 and we will tell you straight away.
