The Quietest Way To Cover A Sliding Door
On a four-metre sliding door you have three honest choices: a vertical, a panel glide, or a curtain. The vertical is the most economical and the one you will hear in a through-breeze. The curtain is the softest and takes the most room. The panel glide sits between them — broad flat panels with nothing loose to move — and on a modern opening with hard finishes it usually looks the most settled of the three.

The reason panel glides sell here and not everywhere is the same reason verticals do: this coast builds around the wide sliding door. The difference is what happens when that door is open, which around here is most of the year. Vertical louvres swing and knock against each other in a through-breeze. Flat panels on a track do not.
The second thing is salt and dust on the track itself. Within a few streets of the water a bottom-running track collects grit and the panels start to drag; a well-specified top-hung system avoids most of that. It is worth asking which you are being quoted, because the price difference is real and so is the difference in five years.
And a panel glide needs somewhere to stack. On a door with a wall to one side that is easy. On a door with glass both sides it is the whole problem, and it is better solved with a tape measure at the quote than with an apology at the fit.
The detail that matters
Fewer, bigger panels beat more, smaller ones
A panel glide is the simplest thing in the range and the easiest to specify badly. Panel count, stack side and how far the track overruns the opening decide whether it works — and none of the three is a fabric decision.
The same opening can be covered by four wide panels or six narrow ones. Fewer panels means fewer vertical lines across the glass and a cleaner look when they are drawn back, but each one is heavier and needs more stack space. We work the count from the wall you have to stack against, not from a standard size.
Panels stack to one side, split to both, or centre-open. Get it wrong and the stack sits over the part of the door you actually walk through. This is settled at the measure with the door open, because it cannot be changed afterwards without re-making the blind. Where there is no wall to stack against, roller blinds or a vertical are the better fit.
If the track stops at the edge of the glass, the stacked panels sit over the glass and you lose part of the view and part of the light permanently. Running the track past the reveal onto the wall costs very little and is the single biggest difference between a panel glide that looks designed and one that looks fitted.

Before you ask
Width, panel count and fabric grade set the price, and the track carries more of the cost than people expect on a wide opening. We will not quote a figure before we have measured the opening and seen how much stack space there is. You get an itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days.
Both cover wide openings and both stack to the side. A vertical uses narrow louvres that also rotate, so you can angle them for glare while keeping airflow. A panel glide uses a few broad flat panels that only slide — no rotation, but nothing to clatter in a breeze and a much calmer look. See our vertical blinds page for the other side of that trade-off.
It depends on the width of the opening and, more importantly, on how much wall you have to stack them against. Fewer and wider looks cleaner but needs more stack room. We work it out at the measure rather than quoting a standard configuration.
Yes, and it is one of the better uses for them. The same track and panels that cover a sliding door will close off a study nook or a media area in an open-plan room, without building a wall.
Not completely. A blockout fabric stops light through the panel, but the panels overlap rather than seal, so a little light comes through the joins and around the edges. For a genuinely dark room, pair them with a blockout blind or a lined curtain.
