Floor-length linen curtains drawn back from a tall window

Linen curtains Brisbane & Gold Coast

Linen Creases. That Is The Point.

Made to measure in linen and linen blends, hung on fully runnered track, from Byron Bay to Brisbane. We have been fitting curtains on this coast since 1978 — long enough to know what a natural fibre does in a Queensland summer.

Why Lusso, Brisbane & Gold Coast

The cheap linen curtain is the expensive one

You Buy A Ready-Made Linen Curtain Twice

A ready-made linen curtain is a perfectly good buy for a rental, a spare room or a window nobody looks at, and I would tell you to go and get one. On a window you sit in front of every evening the sums turn over fast, and they turn on fullness rather than fabric: a ready-made is gathered at roughly one and a half times its track width. A wave fold from us runs 2.3 : 1, and box, reverse, gathered and knife pleat all run 1.8 : 1. On a 3 metre track that is 6.9 metres of cloth against about 4.5. It is the whole difference between a curtain that hangs and one that hangs about.

  • 01Linen is hygroscopic — it takes moisture out of the air and gives it back. So we hem a linen curtain to the drop it will settle at in this climate, not the drop it happens to measure on the day we come.
  • 02Every curtain we make runs on fully runnered track. No rods and no eyelets: linen dragged over a pole wears through at the eyelet long before the cloth gives out anywhere else.
  • 03We do not offer interlining. If you want linen with the body and the blackout of an interlined drape, that is not a curtain we make — better to hear it now than after the quote.

Local conditions

What this climate does to a natural fibre

Linen Moves With The Weather

Brisbane and the Gold Coast sit under months of high humidity, and linen is the fibre that notices. It takes up moisture from the air and lets it go again, and the curtain lengthens and shortens as it does. On a 2.7 metre drop that movement is not theoretical — it is the difference between a hem that kisses the floor in August and one that sits in it in February. A polyester curtain does not do this, which is exactly why a polyester curtain does not look like linen.

The second problem is the one nobody asks about at the measure. East-facing glass on this coast takes direct sun from first light, and natural fibres are less tolerant of UV than synthetics — the Your Home guidance on glazing is clear that east and west glass is the hard case, because the sun sits low and an eave cannot reach it. A linen curtain on unshaded western glass will fade along the leading edge first, and it will do it faster than you expect.

So we ask which way the window faces before we talk cloth. Anyone who does not ask is selling you a fabric, not a curtain.

The detail that matters

Three Things That Decide A Linen Curtain

Every supplier will show you the cloth. These are the three decisions that actually determine whether you still like it in five years — and the three nobody ranking for this term puts in writing.

01 — The hem

Hemmed for where it will settle

A linen curtain measured and hemmed on a dry day will sit long on a wet one. We allow for that at the hem rather than pretending the fabric is stable, which is why a linen curtain is not a same-week product and should not be sold as one.

02 — The heading

Fullness is the look, not the fabric

Wave fold runs 2.3 : 1; box, reverse, gathered and knife pleat run 1.8 : 1. Linen has enough body to hold a wave, which is why it suits S fold better than most cloths — and why a skimped linen curtain looks worse than a skimped synthetic one.

03 — The track

Runnered track, never a pole

We fit fully runnered track and we do not supply rods or eyelets. On linen that is not a stylistic preference: the eyelet is the wear point, and a heavy natural cloth dragged across a pole finds it within a couple of years. How a curtain runs on a track covers the hardware in full.

Gold Coast clients

They keep saying the same word

Read enough of the 85 and a pattern turns up: people talk about how the fabric feels and how it hangs, not about the price. That is what fullness buys, and it is the part a photograph cannot show you.

We had a great experience with lusso blinds. We are very happy with our Roman blinds. We highly recommend their service.

Sam & Morgan Davies

Have used Lusso on numerous occasions since we moved to the Gold Coast 5 years ago and cannot speak highly enough about the quality of both the products and service. Would not hesitate in recommending them.

Chris & Julie Allen

Very happy with all my Lusso blinds. We have had them 14 years and not a problem at all. When we recently had to repair our outdoor blind, they were swift and very efficient in fixing and it is working perfectly again. Would highly recommend this company for all your window covering needs.

Where they go

Where linen earns it, and where it does not

Room By Room, Honestly

01 Living rooms

Linen’s best room. Enough body to hold a wave, enough texture to stop a big wall of cloth reading flat. Run it full length to the floor even if the window stops halfway — it is the cheapest thing you can do to make a room look taller.

Quote
02 Bedrooms

Linen on its own will not darken a room, and no weight of it will. If you sleep past sunrise, put a blockout behind it on a second track and let the linen do the day.

Quote
03 Stacker doors and tall glass

Where linen justifies the money. A long drop shows every millimetre of a crooked track, and a fabric with body hangs straighter over three metres than a light synthetic does.

Quote
04 Bathrooms and laundries

No. A natural fibre in a room that never quite dries out will mark and then grow mould in the weave, and that is excluded from every fabric warranty we know of. Put a shutter in there instead.

05 Rentals and spare rooms

Buy a ready-made and spend the difference on the room you actually sit in. We would rather tell you that now than measure a window where the made-to-measure premium buys you nothing.

Before you ask

Linen curtains — FAQs

Are linen curtains see through at night?

Yes, and more than people expect. Linen is an open weave, so with the lights on inside and darkness outside you will read as a silhouette from the street — that is physics rather than a fault in the cloth, and a heavier linen does not fix it. If the room is overlooked after dark, specify a second layer behind it on a separate track. Our guide to what actually blocks a view goes through it properly.

Do linen curtains shrink when you wash them?

Linen shrinks, which is why we do not recommend washing a made-to-measure linen curtain at all. A curtain hemmed to the floor has no shrinkage allowance to give up, and a wash is how a perfect hem becomes 30mm short permanently. Vacuum it with a soft brush head, spot-clean marks, and have it professionally dry-cleaned if it ever genuinely needs it.

How do you get creases out of linen curtains?

Hang it and wait. Most creases in a linen curtain drop out under the weight of the fabric within a week or two, and the long drop helps. Steam lightly from the back if you are impatient — never iron a hung curtain, and never press a crease flat, because linen holds a pressed line far longer than it holds a hanging one.

Do linen curtains block heat?

Not much on their own. Any curtain closed against hot glass is working after the heat is already inside, and an open natural weave is the least of them at it. Shading the outside of the window is what actually keeps a room cool — if heat is the real problem, an outdoor blind or an awning will beat any curtain we could sell you.

Is linen a good curtain fabric in Queensland?

In the right room, yes. It suits living areas and tall glass, where its body and texture earn the money. It is a poor choice in a bathroom or laundry, and it needs thinking about on unshaded west-facing glass, where a natural fibre fades along the leading edge faster than a synthetic. We ask which way the window faces before we talk cloth.

Do you make linen curtains for Brisbane and the Gold Coast?

Yes, and from Byron Bay to Brisbane. The measure is free, the quote is itemised and lands within 24 to 48 hours, and there is no deposit to get a price. Everything we make runs on fully runnered track — we do not supply rods or eyelets.
