Side tracks
Aluminium channels either side of the blind that the fabric runs inside, closing the light gap along both edges. This is the upgrade that turns a blockout blind into a genuinely dark room, and the one most suppliers never mention.
Dark Enough To Sleep In
Made-to-measure blockout blinds for Gold Coast homes and apartments — with side tracks that close the gaps most blinds leave wide open. Measured by us, made to our specification and fitted by our regular installers — Byron Bay to Brisbane.
Why Lusso, Gold Coast
We fix the gaps, not just the fabric
Every blockout fabric on the market stops light. Almost none of them stop it at the edges — and the edges are where your 5am summer sunrise gets in. That gap is the entire difference between a blind that works and one you end up apologising for.
The range
Local conditions
Sun, salt and 5am summer
A Gold Coast summer sunrise lands before five in the morning, and it lands hard on every east-facing bedroom between Coolangatta and Southport. Inland, a standard blockout roller is usually enough. Here, the light comes in low and horizontal off the water, straight through the gap at the side of the blind.
Then there's the air. Within a few streets of the beach, ordinary chains, brackets and bottom rails start pitting inside a couple of years. We specify corrosion-resistant componentry as standard near the surf, and mould-resistant fabrics for apartments that get closed up between stays.
None of that is on a spec sheet. It's just what you learn fitting blinds in this climate.
The detail that matters
Side tracks, pelmet and drop are what darken the room
Light comes in around a blind rather than through it, which is the single most common complaint we hear about blockout blinds bought elsewhere: the fabric is genuinely opaque, and the room is still bright at dawn. The fabric was never the problem. These three details are.
Aluminium channels either side of the blind that the fabric runs inside, closing the light gap along both edges. This is the upgrade that turns a blockout blind into a genuinely dark room, and the one most suppliers never mention.
Light spills over the top of the roll on a face-fitted blind. Fitting inside the reveal, or adding a pelmet, closes that gap. On a bedroom window we'd specify one or the other every time.
A blind that stops at the sill leaves a bright line underneath. We measure the drop past the opening wherever the window allows it, which costs nothing extra and removes the last obvious leak.
Gold Coast clients
Finally sleeping past sunrise
Any blind looks fine in week one. On this coast the question is whether it still runs after a decade of sun, salt and storm season — and whether the people who supplied it are still around to repair it.
So good! I love the blind, the way it looks and the amount it has minimised the sun and heat.
Dayana
We are very happy with our sun blinds, they are very effective in keeping sun and glare out. The installers were very professional and we would have no problems recommending Lusso blinds to anyone.
Lyell
Very happy with all my Lusso blinds. We have had them 14 years and not a problem at all. When we recently had to repair our outdoor blind, they were swift and very efficient in fixing and it is working perfectly again. Would highly recommend this company for all your window covering needs.

Where they go
What we'd actually specify
Blockout roller with side tracks, fitted in the reveal. This is the room that justifies the upgrade, and the one people regret cutting corners on.
QuoteBlockout, cordless or motorised, without exception. Corded blinds are a genuine strangulation hazard for small children — we won't quote a corded blind for a child's room.
QuoteBlockout panel glides across sliding doors, or a dual roller pairing a screen with a blockout — glare control by day, full dark for the projector at night.
QuoteMould-resistant fabrics and corrosion-resistant hardware. High-rise glass on the Gold Coast cops sun and salt in equal measure, and closed-up apartments cop humidity on top.
QuoteSide tracks plus a pelmet, every time. If you sleep during daylight, the difference between 95% and 99% light blocked is the difference between sleeping and not.
QuoteHow it works
Three steps, quote in 48 hours
We come to you anywhere on the Gold Coast. Detailed quote within 24 to 48 hours, valid for 30 days — no deposit to get a price.
We bring the fabric range to you, check which way each room faces, and tell you honestly which windows need side tracks and which don't. Free, and with no obligation.
Your quote lands within 24 to 48 hours, itemised component by component and valid for 30 days. Once approved, two to three weeks for rollers and verticals.
Our own fitters install, fix into structure rather than plasterboard alone, test every motor and take the packaging away. And in ten years, we are still here to service it.
Where we work
The whole Gold Coast
From Byron Bay to Brisbane, across the whole Gold Coast and inland to the hinterland. If you're anywhere on that stretch, we'll come to you.
Before you ask
It depends on window size, fabric, and whether you add side tracks or motorisation — so any figure quoted before a measure is a guess. As a guide, a standard blockout roller sits well below a made-to-measure blockout roman, and side tracks add roughly 30–40% to a roller. We quote on site, for free.
The fabric does. The gaps around it don't. A standard blockout roller leaves light down both sides and above the roll, which is why a bedroom can still be bright at 5am in December. Side tracks close the sides and a pelmet or reveal fit closes the top — that combination is what gets you genuine darkness.
Nothing. Blockout is the Australian term, blackout the American one, and you'll see both used by Gold Coast suppliers. What does differ is fabric quality and how the blind is installed.
Yes, meaningfully. A blockout fabric with a reflective backing stops radiant heat before it enters the room, and the still air trapped between blind and glass insulates. On east and west-facing Gold Coast glass it's the cheapest thing you can do for summer comfort.
Only if the componentry is specified for it. Within a few streets of the beach we use corrosion-resistant brackets and chains, and mould-resistant fabrics for apartments closed up between stays. Standard inland hardware will pit within a couple of years near the surf.
Two to three weeks from check-measure to installation for blockout rollers and verticals, three to four for romans and panel glides. Motorised blinds can add a week depending on the motor.
