Floor-length sheer curtains stacked clear of open stacking doors onto a coastal deck

Curtains Gold Coast

Curtains That Work With The Doors Open

Custom made curtains for Gold Coast homes and apartments — sheer, blockout and S-fold, on runnered track — measured at your place and fitted by the third generation of a family business trading since 1978.

Why Lusso, Gold Coast

Curtains for the way this coast lives

Made For Open Doors And Sea Air

If every window in your house stays shut and air-conditioned from October to April, a blind will do most of what a curtain does for less money, and I will tell you so at the measure. Most Gold Coast homes are not lived in that way. The stacking doors are open by lunchtime and the breeze comes straight through, and custom made curtains on a track that runs past the opening give you the whole doorway during the day and a proper close at night.

  • 01Trading since 1978, three generations of the Hopkins family, and more than 10,000 completed projects across the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Beachfront towers, canal-front houses and hinterland builds are routine for us.
  • 02Every track we supply runs on runners. If you want the look of a pole, we fit a decorative track that looks like one and draws like a track. We do not do rods or eyelet curtains, so if that is the brief, we are not the right people.
  • 03An itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, valid for 30 days. Fabric, heading and track are separate lines, so you can see where the money goes and take something out.
  • 04Installation workmanship warranted for 12 months, on top of a manufacturer’s warranty of 12 months to 7 years depending on the system and fabric. Member of the Window Shading Association of Australia, with its published Code of Ethics.

The breeze, the glass and the air

Stack It Clear Of The Door

The Bureau of Meteorology’s Gold Coast Seaway station records a mean 3pm wind speed of 23.3 km/h, and it barely drops off in winter — June, the calmest month, still averages 19.1. That is an ordinary afternoon here, and it comes through an open stacking door and straight into whatever is hanging beside it. A sheer left halfway across that doorway becomes a sail. It wraps the frame, drags on its carriers and wears along the leading edge long before the rest of the fabric shows its age.

So the track runs well past the opening, far enough that the whole curtain stacks against wall rather than across glass, and in a room that lives with the doors open a tieback earns its place. The curtain does its work in the evening, once the doors are shut, and stays out of the way all day.

The towers in Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach and Main Beach bring the opposite problem: the glass often runs from one side wall to the other, so there is no wall to stack onto. The usual answer is a split draw, with the curtain opening to both ends so neither stack sits in the middle of the view. If your building has a by-law about how windows look from outside, it will be in the scheme’s registered by-laws, and the Queensland Government explains how to find them. Read them before you fall for a colour.

Then there is the air. Mean 9am humidity at the Seaway sits at 65% or higher in nine months of the year. Fabric copes with that as long as air keeps moving past it, which is the case for leaving a window cracked rather than locking a holiday unit up for six weeks and coming back to find out what grows on a blockout curtain in the dark.

The detail that matters

Three Things To Ask On The Coast

Everyone will bring a fabric book. These three decide whether a curtain near the water still looks right in five years, and none of them is in the book.

01 — Fullness

Spend the fullness on the sheer

Most homes over-specify blockout and under-specify sheers. The blockout spends the day pulled back; the sheer is the curtain you look at from breakfast to dusk, and it is the one that looks thin when the fabric is skimped. We make wave fold at 2.3 times the track width and reverse, box, gathered and knife pleats at 1.8. On a three-metre track that is 6.9 metres of fabric against 5.4, and on a sheer you can see the difference from across the room.

02 — The warranty

Ask what it leaves out

We warrant our installation workmanship for 12 months, and the fabric and track carry their manufacturer’s warranty for 12 months to 7 years. Neither covers fading from sunlight, salt air, mould or condensation. On this coast you should hear that before you order, not after, because it changes which fabric belongs on a window that faces the water all day and how much the glass itself is letting in.

03 — The fixing

Fix the track into something solid

In a house that means timber framing, because plasterboard on its own will eventually let a loaded track go. In a tower it is usually concrete, which holds well once the building’s rules about drilling have been checked. Either way it is settled at the measure, with the window in front of us, not on installation day with the curtains already made.

Units, Houses, And More Than One Property

The reviews that mention curtains tend to mention the same thing: somebody who knew what would suit the room before the fabric book came out.

We had shutters, blinds and curtains made by Lusso Fashion for our unit. The service was prompt and professional and completed even earlier than expected. Deb has a knack of knowing exactly what will suit the client and is…

What I Would Actually Specify

01 Living rooms that open to the deck

A sheer in wave fold on a track that runs past the doors, so it stacks clear of the opening all day. Add a blockout behind it on a double track only if the room genuinely needs to go dark. Most living rooms do not.

Quote
02 Bedrooms

Blockout — or blackout, depending on who is selling it — run to the floor and past the reveal on both sides, because the light that wakes you comes around the curtain rather than through it. If a child sleeps there, it is specified cordless.

Quote
03 High-rise apartments

S-fold across the glass with the draw split to both ends, so neither stack lands in the middle of the view. On a west-facing unit, Verosol SilverScreen curtain fabric is worth asking about: the metallised backing reflects solar radiation rather than absorbing it.

Quote
04 Holiday lets and weekenders

A heading that draws easily for people who have never used it before, and a fabric chosen to be lived with rather than admired. When you lock up for a few weeks, leave the curtains open and some air moving. Still, damp air is harder on fabric than any guest.

Quote
05 Bathrooms and laundries

Not curtains. Fabric and steam are a poor pairing anywhere and a worse one here, so I would put Thermalite shutters or a blind in those rooms and keep the curtains for the rest of the house.

Before you ask

Curtains on the Gold Coast, answered

How much do custom curtains cost on the Gold Coast?

There is no honest figure before a measure, because the price is set by things nobody can guess over the phone: the width and drop, the fabric, the heading and how much fullness it carries, and whether the curtain hangs on a plain or a decorative track. What you get is an itemised quote within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, broken down component by component and valid for 30 days, with no deposit to see it.

How long do made to measure curtains take?

Two to four weeks, depending on the fabric. Sheer, blockout and decorative curtains all sit in that range. The estimate for your job goes on the quote before you pay anything, and it is a good-faith estimate rather than a guarantee.

Will sheer curtains work with the doors open?

Yes, if the track is long enough. The Gold Coast Seaway averages a 23.3 km/h wind at 3pm, so a sheer left across an open door will billow and wrap. Run the track past the opening so the curtain stacks against the wall, add a tieback where the breeze is strongest, and draw the curtain once the doors are shut.

Can you fit curtains in a high-rise apartment?

Regularly. Two things get checked at the measure: what your building’s by-laws say about drilling and about how windows look from outside, and where the curtain can stack when the glass runs wall to wall. A split draw, opening to both ends, usually solves the second.

Will curtains go mouldy near the beach?

They can, and the fabric is rarely the cause. Mean 9am humidity at the Gold Coast Seaway is 65% or more for nine months of the year, and mould needs damp, still air. Keep air moving past the curtain and it is rarely a problem; close a unit up for weeks with the curtains pressed against the glass and it can be. Our warranty does not cover mould or condensation, which is why we would rather say so now.

Do you make eyelet curtains or supply curtain rods?

No. Every track we supply runs on runners, and we do not supply rods, poles or eyelet curtains. If you like the look of a pole, a decorative track gives you that appearance and draws like a track. If it has to be a rod, we are not the right people for the job.

Which parts of the Gold Coast do you cover?

All of it — Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Robina, Coolangatta, Southport, Main Beach, Mermaid Beach, Hope Island, Currumbin and Arundel, and inland to Nerang and the hinterland. The Gold Coast sits in the middle of our Byron Bay to Brisbane corridor. If you want blinds on the Gold Coast priced in the same visit, one measure covers curtains and blinds together.
