Why Lusso, Brisbane & Gold Coast

Judge a fitter on the second visit

Buy It Once

Anyone in this corridor can hang a blind, and on installation day they all look the same. The difference shows up in year three, when a chain snaps or a motor forgets its limits, and the question is whether the number you rang still answers. Cheap window furnishings cost more, because you buy them twice.

  • 01Curtains and blinds on the same quote, itemised component by component, so you can see what each window costs before you commit to any of it. Valid for 30 days.
  • 0248 years and more than 10,000 completed blind projects across the Gold Coast and Brisbane. Started in 1978, still the same family, now the third generation of it.
  • 03Member of the Window Shading Association of Australia, the national body for the trade, which publishes a Code of Ethics its members work to.
  • 0412 months on our installation workmanship from the day we fit it, and 12 months to 7 years on the product itself depending on the system, componentry and fabric.

Storm season is what “near me” is really for

The Week It Matters

Most of the year, distance is irrelevant. A blind hung by someone two hours up the motorway works exactly as well as one hung by someone two streets away. Then summer arrives, a front comes through off the range, and the whole corridor from Tweed to Brisbane finds out at once who its window furnishings company actually is.

Two things break in a storm here, and neither is the thing people expect. The first is an external blind that was left down when the wind got under it. The second is quieter and far more common: the power drops out, and every motorised blind and curtain in the house comes back up having forgotten where its limits were. That is not a fault and it is not a warranty claim. It is a ten-minute reset, and the only question is how long you wait for someone to come and do it. We have customers in Tweed who have had exactly that call answered.

The second-order problem is the one nobody quotes on: salt. Anything within a few streets of the water — and on this coastline that is most of it — gets a constant film of salt on its componentry. It is the reason we specify differently within sight of the beach than we do at Robina or Toowong, and it is the reason our warranty says plainly that salt air, storm and weather damage are not covered. They are not covered by anyone. A company that tells you otherwise has not read its own terms.

If you are still deciding between fabric and slats, the rundown of every type of curtain and blind we make is the place to start. Which is the honest version of the near-me argument. It is not that we are closer than the next company on the map. It is that when something needs a person rather than an email, the drive is an hour, not a freight consignment.

The detail that matters

The Part You Cannot See

Three things decide whether a curtain or a blind still looks right in five years. None of them appear on a quote unless you ask, and none of the companies you are comparing us against publish them.

01 — Cord safety

A compliant blind can be installed non-compliantly

Australia’s mandatory standard for corded internal window coverings is an installation standard as well as a product one. No loose cord may be able to form a loop 220mm or longer at less than 1,600mm above the floor, and a cord guide fitted below that height has to stay attached under a 70N pull. Buy the safest blind on the market, have it hung without the cleat, and you are outside the standard. The ACCC publishes the requirement in full. In a child’s room we will steer you to cordless or motorised and say why. More on how we hang them is on the blind installation page.

02 — Measuring

Measure to the wall, not to the window

Most of the light that gets past a blockout curtain never goes through the fabric. It comes around the edges, over the top and under the hem. A curtain made to the size of the glass leaves a bright halo on all four sides of it at six in the morning, and no amount of fabric weight fixes that. So we measure the opening, the wall it sits in and the aspect the room faces, then size the furnishing to the problem rather than to the window. This is also why we need to be in the room, and why nobody can quote you properly over the phone.

03 — Fullness

Fullness is a number and here is ours

Curtain fullness is the ratio of flat fabric to finished track width, and it is the single biggest driver of what a curtain costs. Ours are fixed: wave fold runs 2.3 : 1, and box, reverse, gathered and knife pleat all run 1.8 : 1. A 3 metre track in wave fold takes 6.9 metres of fabric; the same track at 1.8 : 1 takes 5.4. That is a metre and a half of difference on one window, which is why two quotes for “the same” curtain can be nowhere near each other.

Where they go

What we would actually put in each room

Room By Room

01 Bedrooms

A blockout roller blind to the wall, and a sheer in front of it if you want the room to be pleasant in the daytime as well as dark at night. Most homes over-specify blockout everywhere else and under-specify sheers, and bedrooms are the one room where the heavy fabric earns its place.

Quote
02 Living and dining

Usually a double track: a sheer for the day, a blockout or a decorative behind it for the evening. Every one of our custom curtains runs on a runnered track. If you have your heart set on eyelet curtains threaded onto a pole, we are not the company for you — though a decorative track gives you the look of a pole and still works properly.

Quote
03 Kitchens, bathrooms and laundries

Fabric and moisture are a poor combination, so this is where we will talk you out of curtains. An aluminium venetian or a Thermalite shutter wipes down, does not hold damp and does not mind a window that gets opened every day.

Quote
04 Studies and media rooms

Honeycomb or pleated blinds, because the cell traps a layer of air against the glass and the room stops swinging between a fan-forced oven at three and a fridge at nine. Glare on a screen is a different problem from heat, and it usually wants a lower openness fabric than people expect.

Quote
05 Apartments and balconies

Reveals in a coastal tower are often too shallow for a recess fit, so the fixing goes to the face or the ceiling and the substrate has to be found first. A track screwed into plasterboard alone will pull out; it is only a question of when.

Where we work

Byron Bay To Brisbane

From Byron Bay to Brisbane, across the whole Gold Coast and inland to the hinterland. If you're anywhere on that stretch, we'll come to you.

Before you ask

Curtains and blinds near me — the questions we get asked

Do you come to me, or do I have to go somewhere?

We come to you. We measure at your home or site and bring the fabric samples with us, because a fabric behaves differently in your room than it does under someone else’s lighting. We need the dimensions and the aspect of the room before we can quote at all, which is why nobody can price this properly over the phone. Appointments run Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 4:00pm.

How much do curtains and blinds cost?

There is no honest figure before someone measures, and any company that gives you one over the phone is guessing. What we can tell you is what moves the number. On blinds it is the width of the opening and the fabric. On curtains it is fullness — the ratio of flat fabric to track width. A 3 metre track in wave fold at 2.3 : 1 takes 6.9 metres of fabric, where the same track in a 1.8 : 1 heading takes 5.4. That single choice is usually why two quotes for “the same” curtain are hundreds of dollars apart. Our quote comes back within 24 to 48 hours of the measure, itemised component by component, and it is free.

How long do curtains and blinds take?

From check-measure to installation, not from your first enquiry: curtains run 2 to 4 weeks depending on the fabric. Roller, venetian, vertical, pleated and honeycomb blinds run 2 to 3 weeks. Roman and panel glide blinds run 3 to 4. Thermalite shutters run 4 to 6. Motorisation adds about a week, more if power has to be run to the opening. The number goes on your quote rather than appearing after the deposit, and it is a good-faith estimate rather than a guarantee.

Can I get curtains and blinds from the same company?

Yes, and it is most of what we do — a sheer in front of a roller blind is the single most common thing we fit. One measure, one itemised quote, one installation day and one company to ring if something needs adjusting. Every curtain we supply runs on a runnered track. We do not supply curtain poles or eyelet curtains, so if that is what you are after, we are the wrong call — though a decorative track gives you the look of a pole and works as a proper runnered track.

What areas do you cover?

Byron Bay to Brisbane, which takes in the whole Gold Coast, the Tweed Coast and the Brisbane suburbs, and we travel nationwide for larger work. In practice that means Surfers Paradise, Broadbeach, Burleigh Heads, Palm Beach, Robina, Southport, Coolangatta and Main Beach on the coast, and New Farm, Ascot, Hamilton, Bulimba, Paddington and Toowong in Brisbane. If you are in the corridor and not on that list, ring and ask — the list is shorter than the map.

What is the warranty on curtains and blinds?

We warrant our installation workmanship for 12 months from the date we install, and the products carry their manufacturer’s warranty — between 12 months and 7 years depending on the system, componentry and fabric. Which period applies to your job is stated on your quote. It does not cover fair wear and tear, fading, or damage from sunlight, weather, storm or salt air, and none of that limits your rights under the Australian Consumer Law consumer guarantees.

Do I have to pay a deposit?

Not to get a price — the measure and the quote are free and carry no deposit. Once you accept the quote it is 50% on order, and the remaining 50% on the day of installation. We do not order from suppliers or start manufacture until the deposit has cleared, so the lead time runs from that point rather than from the day you first called.
