The midge season is the outdoor season
Order It Before Spring
Biting midges — the sandflies everyone on a canal knows about — are a big enough Gold Coast problem that Griffith University researchers have studied the species living in our canal estates. They are small enough to get through a standard fly screen, as WA Health puts it plainly, which is why we specify Phantom’s finer midge mesh on canal, river and mangrove-front homes.
The timing is the part people miss. In south-east Queensland, midges are most active from September to April, close to mangroves, canals and estuaries. That is exactly the stretch of the year you want to eat outside. A screen ordered after the first bad evening in October arrives some way into the season it was meant for.
Then there’s the sea breeze. An Executive should be fully down or fully up when the wind gets up — half-down is the position it likes least. A wind sensor will raise it for you, which matters most on a high balcony or a house you leave for the weekend.
None of this makes the mesh in the brochure the wrong choice. It just means the right one depends on which side of the street you live on.
