Shutters Gold Coast

Built For The Salt Air

Thermalite polymer shutters, made to measure in Australia and fitted from Coolangatta to Hope Island. Hinged, sliding or fixed — and no timber, for a reason the salt air explains below.

Why Lusso, Gold Coast

The material decides the outcome

Polymer, Not Timber

Timber shutters look superb, and there is a reason every second showroom on this coast leads with them. We do not sell them, and we do not sell plantation shutters either. Within a few kilometres of the water, the material is the whole decision — so we make it once, properly, and stand behind it.

  • 01Thermalite is an advanced polymer, not a coated timber. There is no grain to take up moisture and no paint film to lift, so a window three streets from the beach looks the same in year ten as it did on the day we hung it.
  • 02Hinged, sliding or fixed, made to the opening rather than to a nominal size. We take the dimensions and the aspect of the room before quoting, because a shutter cut to a rounded number is a shutter that binds in February.
  • 03Australian made, on a 4–6 week lead time from check-measure to installation, and that number goes on your quote rather than turning up after the deposit.
  • 0448 years, three generations and more than 10,000 completed projects across the Gold Coast and Brisbane, under the Window Shading Association of Australia Code of Ethics.

Local conditions

What the salt air actually does

The Hinges Go First

A marine atmosphere does not stop at the beachfront. The Gold Coast has several hundred kilometres of constructed canals threading salt water through Hope Island, Sovereign Islands, Mermaid Waters and Broadbeach Waters, which is why a house eight kilometres inland can sit in the same corrosive air as one at Main Beach. In a timber shutter the blades take up that moisture, swell against the frame and stop closing flush. The paint film lifts before the timber does.

The part people forget is the hardware. A shutter is blades, a frame, and a set of small metal components — hinges, pins, tension screws, magnetic catches — and those pit long before anything visible goes wrong. A panel that will not sit shut has failed, however good the blades still look from the driveway.

Add the aspect. East-facing glass on this coast takes direct sun from first light through most of the morning, and a shutter is the one furnishing you can leave closed against the heat while still tilting the blades for air. That is the argument for them here, and it is a better one than the showroom photograph. Where a shutter is not the right call, the rest of our blinds on the Gold Coast usually is.

A shutter you re-hang every third summer is not a window furnishing. It is a subscription.

The detail that matters

The Detail That Decides It

Three things that change whether a shutter still works in five years. None of them appear on a showroom price list, and all three are settled before we quote.

01 — Aspect

Measure the light, not just the opening

We need the dimensions and the aspect of the room before we can quote, because they decide the panel layout. A west-facing living room wants its stiles away from the sightline; a bathroom wants a fixed panel where a hinged one would swing into the vanity. Getting that wrong is not a fault you can adjust out later.

02 — Balconies

Check the body corporate before you order

Most Gold Coast balcony shutters go on a unit, and anything fixed to the exterior of a lot usually needs body corporate approval as an improvement to common property. We would rather raise it at the measure than have you find out at installation. Colour and frame choice are often what the committee actually cares about, and both are easy to accommodate up front.

03 — Child safety

No cords, by design

Corded window coverings are a genuine hazard in a child's room, and they carry a mandatory safety standard in Australia for that reason. A shutter has no cord and no chain at all. If that is the problem you are solving in a nursery or a child's bedroom, it is the strongest argument for shutters we can make, and it costs us the safety-device upsell to say so.

Gold Coast clients

Three of eighty-five

Every one of these was left by someone who had shutters fitted alongside something else — which is the usual pattern. Shutters go where fabric struggles, and curtains go everywhere else.

We had shutters, blinds and curtains made by Lusso Fashion for our unit. The service was prompt and professional and completed even earlier than expected. Deb has a knack of knowing exactly what will suit the client and is…

Lynne & Peter

We love our shutters and curtains that were installed by Lusso Fashion for Windows. Friendly, professional and efficient service. Highly recommended.

Kelly Hunter

Quality service, my blinds and shutters look amazing! Highly recommend using Lusso for any of your window coverings!

Where they go

Where a shutter beats the alternative

Room By Room

01 Bathrooms and ensuites

This is the room shutters were made for. Fabric and moisture are a poor combination, and a blind that lives in steam will show it within a couple of years. A polymer shutter wipes down, tilts for privacy and air at the same time, and does not care how long the shower runs. If you fit shutters in one room only, make it this one.

02 Bedrooms

Shutters tilt, they do not black out. Closed blades still pass a line of light at every joint, so if the problem is a 5am December sunrise you want block out blinds on the Gold Coast instead, or a shutter with one behind it. We would rather tell you that now than fit the wrong thing beautifully.

03 Balconies and patios

External shutters close off a balcony against wind and low afternoon sun while still letting air through the blades, which is the thing a solid screen cannot do. On a unit, check the body corporate first. Where the span is wide or the exposure is severe, outdoor blinds on the Gold Coast are often the better answer.

04 Sliding doors and wide spans

Sliding shutter panels stack across the opening on a track, so there is nothing to rattle in a sea breeze and no cord to manage. It is the one application where we will happily talk you out of curtains, because a full-height sheer across a door you use forty times a day becomes a chore.

05 Living rooms and kitchens

Tilted blades cut glare and heat while keeping the airflow, which is straightforward passive shading and works better on east and west glass than anything you can hang. In a kitchen the wipe-clean argument applies again. For everything softer, our custom curtain range is the other half of most jobs.

Before you ask

Shutters on the Gold Coast, answered

How much do shutters cost on the Gold Coast?

It depends on the opening, and any figure quoted before a measure is a guess. What moves the number is the size of the opening, how many panels it takes, and whether the panels are hinged, sliding or fixed — a bank of small bathroom windows and a single 3.6 metre sliding door run can cost the same and look nothing alike on paper. We measure for free, quote within 24 to 48 hours, itemise it component by component, and hold the price for 30 days.

How long do shutters take to make and install?

4 to 6 weeks from check-measure to installation, and that number goes on your quote rather than appearing after you have paid a deposit. It is a good-faith estimate, not a contractual guarantee. Larger runs and unusual colours sit at the top of that range.

Do you sell plantation shutters or timber shutters?

No. We supply Thermalite polymer shutters only, in hinged, sliding and fixed configurations. Timber and plantation shutters are what most of this coast advertises, and we have decided not to sell them, because within a few kilometres of salt water they are a maintenance commitment we are not willing to hand a client.

Are polymer shutters really better than timber near the water?

For a coastal home, yes. Polymer has no grain to take up moisture and no paint film to lift, so the blades keep closing flush and the finish holds. Timber is the better looking material in a dry climate and we will not pretend otherwise. On the Gold Coast, where canal estates push salt air well inland, the material outlives the aesthetic argument.

Can shutters go outside on a balcony or patio?

Yes, and external shutters work well against wind and low sun because the blades still pass air. Two things to settle first. If you are in a unit, fixing anything to the outside of the lot generally needs body corporate approval. And if the span is very wide or very exposed, outdoor blinds usually do the job better — we will say so at the measure.

Which Gold Coast suburbs do you cover?

All of them, and past them. We fit from Byron Bay to Brisbane, which takes in Coolangatta, Palm Beach, Currumbin, Burleigh Heads, Mermaid Beach, Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Main Beach, Southport, Bundall, Robina, Nerang, Helensvale, Runaway Bay, Paradise Point, Hope Island and Sanctuary Cove. Larger projects we take nationwide.
