Shutters Brisbane

Made To The Opening You Actually Have

Thermalite polymer shutters for Brisbane homes — hinged, sliding or fixed, measured on site and fitted by the third generation of a family business trading since 1978. No timber and no plantation shutters, which is a decision rather than a gap in the range.

Why Lusso, Brisbane

We fit one shutter material

One Material, Chosen On Purpose

Every other shutter company in Brisbane will sell you basswood, cedar, aluminium and polymer, and let you pick. That is a fair offer and it wins them work we do not get. We fit Thermalite polymer and nothing else, because in a subtropical city with a hundred years of timber housing stock it is the one that keeps behaving in year eight.

  • 01Thermalite is an advanced polymer rather than a painted timber, so it does not absorb moisture — which is why it holds its shape in a Brisbane bathroom, ensuite or laundry where a painted louvre swells and sticks.
  • 02Hinged, sliding and fixed panels are all made to measure, so a bay, a corner or a stepped Queenslander sash gets its own frame instead of the nearest standard size.
  • 03We measure at your place and quote in 24 to 48 hours, itemised component by component, and the quote holds for 30 days.
  • 04Forty-eight years and more than 10,000 completed projects, and we are a member of the Window Shading Association of Australia, which publishes the code of ethics we work to.

We Measure The Opening, Not The Plan

A Queenslander that has been sitting on stumps since the 1920s is not square any more, and neither are most of the post-war cottages in Paddington, Bardon, Ashgrove, Red Hill and Clayfield. Curtains and blinds forgive that. They hang from a track and a few millimetres of lean disappears into the fabric. A shutter is a rigid panel in a rigid frame, so it does the opposite — it reports the error as a wedge of daylight down one stile, wider at the top than the bottom, and you will see it every day for the next twenty years.

That is a measuring and frame problem rather than a product problem. It is settled on site by checking the opening in both diagonals, then choosing a frame that carries the discrepancy instead of a panel that fights it. What it cannot be settled by is a photograph and a phone call, which is how a fair amount of shutter quoting in this city gets done.

The second thing Brisbane does to shutters is humidity. The Bureau of Meteorology has the city sitting at 9am relative humidity in the seventies for most of the year, and the river suburbs — Chelmer, Graceville, Bulimba, West End — have taken water twice in eleven years. Polymer does not absorb moisture, so it does not swell, split or lose paint adhesion the way a timber louvre does. That is the mechanism, and it is the whole reason we sell one material rather than four.

None of which helps if the opening was measured wrong. The material buys you year eight; the measure buys you week one.

The detail that matters

The Three Things That Decide It

A shutter is a joinery product hung in a wall that was built by someone else, decades ago, out of timber that has been moving ever since. These are the three decisions that separate a shutter that still closes properly in 2040 from one that does not.

01 — The measure

Check both diagonals before you order

Width at the top, middle and bottom, height at both jambs and the centre, and then the two diagonals. If the diagonals disagree, the opening is a parallelogram and the panel has to be built to suit it. We would rather find that at the measure than on the day of installation, and it is why we need the dimensions and the aspect of the room before we quote anything.

02 — The frame

The frame absorbs what the wall got wrong

An L-frame, a Z-frame and a bullnose frame all sit differently against a reveal, and the choice is usually made by how much the opening is out and how deep the reveal is. Get it right and a crooked window looks deliberate. Get it wrong and you have a shadow line that tapers, which no amount of good fabric elsewhere in the room will distract from.

03 — The fixing

Shutters are heavy, and plasterboard is not a substrate

A full-height sliding panel carries real weight, and it swings on the same three hinges every day. In a timber Queenslander there is usually solid hardwood to fix into and the job is straightforward. In a rendered block or a modern lightweight reveal it is not, and the fixing has to find something structural. We have been called out to more than one track that pulled out of a ceiling six months after someone else installed it, and the failure is almost never the product.

Brisbane & Gold Coast clients

Eighty-five reviews, all five stars

These three are clients who had shutters fitted alongside blinds or curtains, which is how most Brisbane jobs actually run — shutters in the wet rooms and the western windows, something softer everywhere else.

We love our shutters and curtains that were installed by Lusso Fashion for Windows. Friendly, professional and efficient service. Highly recommended.

Kelly Hunter

Quality service, my blinds and shutters look amazing! Highly recommend using Lusso for any of your window coverings!

Amanda & Nathan Ryan

We had shutters, blinds and curtains made by Lusso Fashion for our unit. The service was prompt and professional and completed even earlier than expected. Deb has a knack of knowing exactly what will suit the client and is…

Where We Would Specify A Shutter, And Where We Would Not

01 Bathrooms and ensuites

Shutters, every time. Fabric and moisture are a poor combination, and a Brisbane ensuite is humid for most of the year. Tilt the louvres up and you get daylight and ventilation with no sightline from the street.

02 Bedrooms

Shutters close down hard, but they are a louvre system, not a blockout. Light finds the gaps between blades. If you need a genuinely dark room, we would put a shutter on the window for privacy and add a blockout blind behind it, or use curtains instead.

03 Living and dining

This is where sliding panels earn their money, particularly across a wide western opening in Toowong, Chelmer or Bardon where the afternoon sun is the entire problem. Blades tilted down cut the glare and still pass air.

Quote
04 Verandahs and sleepouts

The classic Queenslander conversion. A fixed or hinged shutter closes an enclosed verandah off from the neighbours without turning it into a dark room, which is what a solid screen does.

05 Balconies and patios

External shutters work against wind and low sun because the blades still pass air. Two things to settle first: in a unit, fixing anything to the outside of the lot generally needs body corporate approval, and on a wide or badly exposed span outdoor blinds usually do the job better. We will say so at the measure.

Before you ask

Shutters in Brisbane — the questions we get asked

How much do shutters cost in Brisbane?

There is no honest square-metre figure before a measure, and nobody in this SERP publishes one either. What moves the number is panel count, frame type, whether the panels hinge or slide, and how far the opening is out of square. A single bathroom window and a four-panel sliding run across a living room are different orders of magnitude. The quote is free, itemised component by component and valid for 30 days, and there is no deposit to get a price.

How long do shutters take to make and install?

Four to six weeks for Thermalite shutters, running from the check-measure rather than from your first enquiry. That is slower than the local manufacturers who quote two to three weeks, and we would rather tell you that now than after you have paid a deposit. The date goes on the quote, not after the deposit.

Do you sell plantation shutters or timber shutters?

No. We fit Thermalite, which is an advanced polymer, in hinged, sliding and fixed panels. Plantation and timber shutters are a genuinely good product in a dry climate and we are not going to pretend otherwise — we just do not think painted timber is the right call in a Brisbane bathroom or a river suburb, so we do not stock it. If timber is what you want, we are the wrong company and you should say so early.

Are polymer shutters any good in the Queensland climate?

That is the reason to use them here. Polymer does not absorb moisture, so it does not swell, split or lose paint adhesion in a humid room the way a painted timber louvre does. It also will not be eaten. The trade-off is that the material choice is one material, and you are picking from a colour and finish range rather than a timber grain.

Will shutters fit an old Queenslander window that is out of square?

Usually, yes — that is what the frame is for. We check both diagonals at the measure, and if the opening is a parallelogram the frame is specified to carry the discrepancy so the panel still sits and closes properly. What we will not do is order off a photograph and hope. If the opening is too far gone, we will tell you at the measure rather than on installation day.

Can shutters go on an outside window, a balcony or a patio?

Yes, and external shutters work well against wind and low sun because the blades still pass air, which a solid screen cannot do. Two things to settle first. In a unit, fixing anything to the outside of the lot generally needs body corporate approval. And where the span is wide or the exposure is severe, outdoor blinds in Brisbane usually do the job better — we will say so at the measure.

Are shutters safer than corded blinds for a child's room?

They are, and it is the one clear safety argument for the product. A shutter has no cord and no chain, so it sits outside the hazard the ACCC's mandatory standard for corded internal window coverings exists to address. Where a room needs a blind as well, specify it cordless.

Which Brisbane suburbs do you cover?

All of them, north and south of the river — New Farm, Ascot, Hamilton, Clayfield and Bulimba through to Paddington, Toowong, Chelmer, West End and Camp Hill. Our service corridor runs from Byron Bay to Brisbane, so we also fit the Gold Coast and the Tweed. Give us the suburb on the enquiry and we will tell you the next measure we have free.
